Hysteroscopy

Hysteroscopy

Hysteroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure that allows the gynecologist to look inside a woman’s uterus (womb) using a thin, lighted tube called a hysteroscope. It helps diagnose and treat problems like heavy bleeding, abnormal periods, polyps, fibroids, and infertility. This procedure is usually done without any cuts or stitches – the hysteroscope is gently passed through the vagina and cervix into the uterus.

When is Hysteroscopy Needed?

You might need a hysteroscopy if you have:

  • Heavy or irregular menstrual bleeding
  • Bleeding after menopause
  • Difficulty in getting pregnant
  • Repeated miscarriages

Hysteroscopy Procedure: Step-by-Step

  1. Preparation: The procedure can be done under local or general anesthesia, depending on the case.

  2. Insertion: A thin, telescope-like tool (hysteroscope) is inserted into the uterus through the vagina and cervix.

  3. Uterus Inspection: The uterus is filled with saline (salt water) to expand it for a clear view.

  4. Diagnosis/Treatment: The doctor looks for abnormalities and may remove polyps, fibroids, or scar tissue if needed.

  5. Completion: The procedure usually takes 15–30 minutes. Most women can go home the same day.

Benefits of Hysteroscopy

  1. No cuts or stitches:
Hysteroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure performed through the vagina, so there are no external cuts or stitches involved.

  2. Quick recovery:
Since the procedure is less invasive, most patients recover quickly and can return to their daily activities within a day or two.

  3. Accurate diagnosis:
It provides a clear and direct view of the uterus, helping doctors accurately identify the cause of abnormal bleeding or other issues.

  4. Treatment during the same procedure:
Many uterine problems, such as polyps or fibroids, can be treated immediately during the diagnostic hysteroscopy itself, avoiding the need for separate surgeries.

Less pain and fewer complications:
Hysteroscopy typically causes minimal discomfort and carries a lower risk of complications compared to traditional open surgery.
